Should I go to Uni?
Thursday, 3 March 2016
In the autumn of 2014, I had just entered my final year of A Levels and was told that it was time to apply for university. Having absolutely no clue what I wanted to do, I decided that it might have be fun to teach maths or to write books. For a while I was set on the former, gaining experience in the classroom and before I knew it, I was being interviewed for a place at uni. Having gained an offer and feeling pretty proud of myself, it wasn't long before the doubt set in. I have never really been set on anything in my life; I seem to suffer from serial indecisiveness. So soon enough, I decided that in fact I couldn't really stand teaching and I felt a little bit lost for a while.
I cannot tell you how much I understand the word 'purposeless' now.
And so the months passed and exams were creeping up on me and I somehow decided that I wanted to be a writer again. And then I wanted to be a publisher and. it. just. kept. going. on. and on... Until the 13th of August 2015. Results Day.
So I went through a process called 'Clearing' and now I'm studying Accounting and Finance at one of the top unis in the UK. I guess what I'm trying to say here is that well... You never know what can happen in life. One minute I'm a writer, the next an accountant... So many people have this misconception that those of us who go to university have it all planned out and know what we want to do and where we're going in life and blah-de-blah. Nope. I'm telling you that ever since my first careers lesson when I was 13, I have had no single clue as to what I want to do.
And it's ok.
Just because I'm doing accounting today, doesn't mean I will be for the next 10 years of my life. I am at university for the experience, not just the knowledge. I am there to widen my options and enhance my employability so that I can do just about anything I want to and can do with what I have. Don't miss out just because you're unsure of what the future holds, that is all I'm saying.
But it's also fine to not go to university.
There are so many options out there like apprenticeships, internships, schemes and school leavers programmes. So take advantage of them. I know that personally, I never want to stop learning because there is so much more out there that I need to know about.
And if you're still not sure, take a gap year. Go find yourself and all that cliche stuff. Go somewhere amazing and meet new people. Don't stay at home all year, get out and see the world! I know that this is something that I definitely want to do once I've finished my degree. I will not be coming back to England for a while, that is certain.
That's all I got for today,
Meg x
